Hi, A lovely tree in the front yard of the house I just moved into. I'd like to know the species / variety. Location is Victoria. Sorry that there are no pics of foliage (currently winter), however I'm hoping that someone will know via looking at the fruit thats on the tree. It's nice to have a tree which fruits this time of year - adds some nice colour and life to the yard. http://plants4cam.shutterfly.com/29 http://plants4cam.shutterfly.com/29#27 http://plants4cam.shutterfly.com/29#28 Thanks.
Could be Nispero / Nespoli / Loquat - Eriobotyra japonica. Leaves would be the conclusive feature; they're fairly distinctive.
Ditto to a hawthorn; possibly the cultivar Crataegus 'Grignonensis', which has very late-ripening fruit.
Closer view of tree needed. A common one with fruit coloration and trunk, main branch appearance like those shown is Lavalle hawthorn, a hybrid with large, often partly yellow fruits inherited from the Mexican hawthorn half of the cross. But it usually has a coarser texture than the trees shown, with thicker, less numerous twigs. Victoria has some public plantings of particular kinds of rose family trees not seen much elsewhere in the region. Of unusual interest is a hybrid characterized by large, long-lasting orange-red fruit which makes the tree handsome in fall and early winter: Cratægus x Lavallei, seen in the 1800 block of Deman Street east of Fernwood. The fruit last until March sometimes, and the leaves are retained until December. http://www.arthurleej.com/a-victoriarosetrees.html
Afterward drove past mass planting of Lavalle hawthorn at 164th & I-5, between Everett and Seattle. Clearly the same tree.
