This small tree started growing in my backyard a few years ago. Its shaped like a vase and has sawtooth shaped leaves. Can anyone help identify it?

    Thanks.

Is this the American elm that comes down with Dutch elm disease?

Hard to tell at this age, it is still in juvenile foliage. There are several elm species it could be.

Are the leaves rough or smooth on the upper surface? That will help to narrow it down some.

Two things I notice are that the leaf bases aren't particularly uneven and the leaves have unevenly sized teeth. Maybe in a few years these characteristics will change.

That's normal for elm seedlings, in my experience. The oblique bases develop later.

The leaf tops are rough, almost like tiny hairs sticking out.
