Any thoughts on whether or not tree bracing is worth the effort. Here is an example, a sugar maple with an existing bad crotch angle or fork on the main leader has split during a wind storm causing a 1 foot long split right down the middle. should it be done at all? how effective will it be? if it is worth it, is there a proper method of determining where you would install the steel rods to mend the split? thanks.
as far as I know the jury is still split regarding cabling and bracing. I would consider using a system like the Cobra tree restraint system. http://www.aces.uiuc.edu/~isa-sca/newsletter/cobra.html
