Learning to recognise trees by their bark. These photos were taken in Yosemite National Park. I would appreciate help identifying them. Hopefully I have the right bark with it's corresponding leaf!
Re: trees Michael, Kew does recognize this as a sub-species. Can you tell us how it is distinct from P. contorta?
Re: trees Cones that always open at maturity (instead of often being serotinous) and are yellow-buff (not orange-brown); also differences in bark (thinner, less fissured), needle anatomy, and resin chemistry. Distribution: Pinus contorta subsp. contorta: Coastal, southern Alaska south to NW California. Pinus contorta subsp. murrayana: Cascades, Sierra Nevada. Pinus contorta subsp. latifolia: Rocky Mts.
