starting a project to recognise trees by their bark, so what follows are the samples I took in Yosemite National Park, California. Figured they would be similar to those growing in Vancouver forests.

    Re: trees

Pinus ponderosa subsp. benthamiana (Pacific Ponderosa Pine).

It doesn't get as far north as Vancouver in the wild, only north to the Puget Sound area in Washington. A different subspecies Pinus ponderosa subsp. ponderosa does occur further east in BC though.

    Out of date!

Typical P. ponderosa subsp. ponderosa (as discovered by David Douglas in the Spokane region) includes as a synonym P. washoensis, and occurs from W Nevada and NE California, north to BC and east to central Montana. P. ponderosa subsp. benthamiana occurs from the Seattle area south to southern California. See the Gymnosperm Database for details.
