I am going to chop up on of my parents dieffenbachia and take a stem cutting on the bus back to calgary. More then likley i wont take any leaves or roots just the cutting. How long will it last? |Whats the best way to pack it? Should i let it dry out before i take it?

I'm not sure how long the drive is, but it should be fine. If it is cutting from the stem, I wouldn't do anything, but if you cut a bit from the "bulb" I would just wrap it in damp newspaper, to give it a bit of moisture to last the journey...

And if it is still cold outside (below about 10°C), wrap it in a few layers of bubble plastic for the wait at the bus stop and the walk from bus stop to house door.

well the bus ride is around 20 hours, but i can almost for sure leave my bag inside the bus except when i get to winnipeg and transfer buses. OF course il be inside the terminal. Im assuming that i just wrap it in plastic wrap and cover it with blankets to keep it warm. When I get home, im also assuming that i jsut throw it in watr and wait till it roots up. Anything else that you might suggest?

I would wrap it in damp paper towel and then stick it in a zip loc baggie .. double bag it if you want ... then stick it in your baggage if it is around your clothes it should stay warm .. then when you get it home .. i would do the research on the net on how to root that type of plant .. cause you can actually take sections of the cane and stick it in the dirt sideways and it will root .. they do take some time ..
im not awake enough to remember the name of that type of rooting.. lol.. but you will find it on the net ..
    good luck

Remember the luggage storage lockers will be unheated! Keep it with you inside the bus.
