In our yard we have a white lilac bush buried between large trees and our fence. These combined completely hide the lilac and I was hoping to move it to another location in our yard. I live in Edmonton Alberta and we are a zone 3/4. When and where would be ideal?

I am unsure if it should be moved in fall or spring, or full sun, part sun or shade? The plant is about 6'4 inches so it is rather tall. Any other tips?

    Thank you in advance.

Easy to handle but there likely best moved end of winter as it is so cold.

Thank you I was thinking spring also as it would have the best chance to root.

definitely move it in spring. and an overcast day certainly wouldn't hurt!

i'd also suggest you cut it back by at least a third...that will help with the shock that will occur and let the roots focus on themselves rather than trying to supply food to all 6 feet of bush.

you'll not have flowers for one year...it's worth it though if it helps the plant to get re-established more quickly!

How much sun exposure should I give it?

    Thanks for your tips!!!!!

lilac's generally do best in full sun conditions. they also need good air movement around them.

transplanting is best done on overcast days because there's less chance for the roots to be damaged from the heat of the sunlight. you'll want to prepare the new spot first (get the hole dug) before digging up the bush...and then replant as quickly as possible. the longer the roots are exposed the more stress is caused.
