Hello Everyone, First time user and new to citris. I plan on transplanting 2 calamondin trees into pots. I bought one at Lowes and one at Growquest. I think the one at Lowes is in a 1 gallon pot and the other in a 1/2 gal pot. I read some of the other posts about potting mediums of CHC, sounds like a great idea. My questions are How big should the pots be for transplanting? Should I do it now or after the flowers become fruit? Thanks in advance!
First slip the trees out of the present containers, and look at the root system to see if they even need to be transplanted. The ideal time when transplanting should be done, and to avoid any root bound stress, is as soon as the root development has progressed to the point so that the roots will hold the soil mix together when the tree is removed from the container, no more. This is much sooner than would normally be anticipated from observing the root system. Being root bound is, therefore, not a specific point, or condition, but rather a progressively undesirable condition from the ideal state of root development, to the very undesirable point where the tree should be thrown away. The length of time a tree can be grown or held in a container is limited. The air space in the container's growth medium, so essential to oxygen relationships and active root growth , is rapidly filled by roots as the tree grows. In a sense, the tree restricts itself as the demand for soil oxygen by the root system increases, and the availability of oxygen decreases due to filling of the air spaces with roots and settling and decomposition of the media. Normally you can transplant into a container 4 inches wider. Citrus flowers normally only last a few days to a week. If you wish to wait it should not make much difference. However, proper transplanting with due care, should not make any difference whether the tree is in bloom or not. - Millet (1,406-)
