    Alright,

I live on a small coastal island in Howe Sound and just had a large area on my property cleared. I would like to begin growing some fruit trees and plant a large garden. I have absolutely ZERO experience in these matters and would appreciate any suggestions anyone has.

Should I have the soil analyzed? Who does soil analysis? Are there any "must have" books you can recommend?

    Thanks.

Most of the islands in the Howe Sound have a very thin topsoil on a bedrock base you might want to terraces your garden if possible. Plan out where you want your garden in relationship to weather condition in your area as I remember the winds that come out of Squamish can be brutal. Start with a small garden and work up to a size that you can manage. As for your soil it's most likely on the acid side if you have just removed native trees. I am sure there are other people here who can add to this. For fruit trees try this site....http://derrysorchardandnursery.ca/ they are local here in the Fraser Valley and have wealth of knowledge.
    Good luck on your adventure.
