My father overplanted this lot with pine and cedar trees about 30 years ago. There is one really big pine tree quite close to the house that is now starting to lift the paving stones with its roots.

I would like to remove the tree and make room for some smaller plantings more in scale with the house and lot. Any advice on how to proceed? I have never tackled anything like this before.

The tree trunk is about 20" diameter about 4' up the trunk.

You could always take a chainsaw to it if your up to it and then drill holes in the stump and pour RoundUp in the holes to really start the decay... Otherwise hiring a stump removal company would be needed...

For something this close to the house, I'd hire a professional.

Thank you for your replies. This is just what I needed to take the next step in this process. I have to get a permit from the city, and I will hire a tree removal service. I'll just add these things to my to-do list!
