My tomatoes have always been beautiful, but the last two years they have had a problem. The outside is red and beautiful ... but, when you cut it open, the inside is yellow or white. Does anybody know why this is happening and what I need to do to make it stop?

Hello JoanI, Let me preface by saying I'm not an expert, however, it sounds to me like more than likely a soil issue. Either a deficiency or overabundance of a particular nutrient. Also, is the problem with just one variety of tomato, or several?

Have you had your soil tested? I would bypass the home test kits sold at the big stores like walmart, they typically just do npk tests which are helpful, but you may want somethiing more comprehensive. Look in the phone book and contact your local agriculture extension office either through the county, or your state university.

They will give you a sample collection kit that you can use to send a sample to their lab for analysis. My local charges 6$ for a basic test, and 15$ for a comprehensive test covering about 10 different nutients. They will send you back an analysis and recomendations for ammending the soil depending on what crop you are trying to grow.

What about rotation? have you grown in in the same spot for many years?

Hopefully someone else will have some ideas also, and good luck!
