There is no Obituary section. So I`ll put it here. Today, The road workers widening our road/bridge, Bulldozed down a 30 year old Jacaranda tree. No questions asked of the locals. I watched from my studio window, 3 minutes and it was gone
Sad to see an attractive tree go, but isn't Jacaranda an invasive alien as welcome as rabbits or Opuntia in Oz?
I had a similar discovery today. Near here, in Sergeantsville, NJ, a small, historic hamlet in one of the few remaining unspoiled, rural areas of New Jersey, there was a grove of six or seven mature Franklinia alatamaha, a rather rare tree that has been extinct in the wild since its discovery in the 18th century. I've watched for these trees in bloom every year since we moved out here from Brooklyn seven years ago. A developer has wiped the site clean. No sign of these trees remains.
Jacaranda is ranked 156th in the list of 200 Most Invasive Plants of Southeast Queensland (PDF). Very sad to hear about those Franklinia.
The loss of any tree (weed or not) in our chop it down and to hell with the planet attitude is a loss.....wonder who will be around to use these roads when the lungs of the planet are so badly damaged that mother nature is forced to retaliate...
