I found this growing in patches in a local woods. It appears to propagate via shoots, since when I dug up these samples I found they're all connected. It's clearly an evergreen, but other than that I have no idea what it is. Can anyone identify this plant?

It won't last in a pot - they have highly specialised requirements and are very sensitive to root disturbance, and can't be cultivated. Best left undisturbed in the wild.
