I have this tree in my yard that hasn't produced anything for the last 7 years since I've lived there. Suddenly, this year it produces a small red fruit that is similar is size to a cherry. When I was out in the yard and got a closer look they appeared to be apples. I took a nibble and sure enough they were, or a least had the exact same taste and texture of an apple. Searches on the internet have provided nothing so I registered and posted for some help with finding out what these are. Here are some pictures for reference:
Some form of crab apple, may be? One would need to see the tree and flowers to help ID, but the fruits look similar to those I have seen on 'Red Sentinel' (Malus x robusta 'Red Sentinel'). But it's tough to make an ID just based on the fruits alone. I have 'Prairie Fire' in our front yet, but the fruits are a uniform dark red - much darker colour than those in your pictures.
Looks like the crabapples that were in my yard when I was a kid. Crabapples are edible and very tasty, and can be used to make Crabapple Jelly. I think it takes fruit trees 10 years to mature and produce fruit so that might be why you are just now seeing fruit after living there for 7 years.
