Hi out there, Does anyone know the botanical name for the cactus I just bought? It was identified on-line as "Timothy Cactus". It has several bright green, round and carrot-like upright stems with little leaves coming directly off the sides. Anything I need to know that is pecular to its maintanance? THANKS
If I found your "timothy cactus" online, it looks like someone named Timothy uploaded several pix, naming the pic files timothy-cactus, timothy-cactus-1, ...-2, ...-3, etc. From the description you gave & the pix found at this website (timothy-cactus-4.jpg): http://www.nparks.gov.sg/blogs/garden_voices/index.php/2007/09/20/catchy-cactus/ I believe the one you're interested in is Austrocylindropuntia subulata (syn. Opuntia subulata). Is this site the one where you found the pic of your plant?
Mystery solved. Never heard of a "Timothy" cactus. The leaves are too small for Austrocylindropuntia subulata. Looks like Austrocylindropuntia exaltata, a widely grown natural hybrid between A. subulata and A. cylindrica. Often grown as a "living hedge" in South America. Very easy to grow. Regular cactus & succulent care. http://www.cactus-mall.com/clubs/faq.html
