according to the old farmers almanac, for the lower mainland, the last frost is mar 28. should i wait until then to unwrap my palms and subtropicals or can the be done sooner.

I'd say to wait for another week or two or listen very closely to the weather. Never can tell when Mother Nature doesn't read the almanac and give you an unpleasant surprise.

    Report card

Just returned from St Maarten on Tuesday. Yesterday, I unwrapped all my subtropicals.. hope it wasn't too soon.. my larger trachie did quite well, the two small medit fan palms didn't do well.. they are quite dark brown. (they were the ones most tightly under protection??!!??) My quadeloupe palm was in great shape, my cardboard palm was competely brown which I knew would happen.. my two small sabel palms were fine (unlike the larger one with the brown leaves on top). My banana has wilted, but there is one section that is green. My Canary Islands were fine and my other small trachies did ok as well. All in all, I'm quite pleased with the survial rate.

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear about the damage, but I'd wait and see if any recover from the roots.

I see some green, so I'm thinking that the root system is ok. Only time will tell. If you are expecting any hard frosts, I'd cover them up with an old blanket.

    Good luck,
    Newt
