Plant Identification Needing some help! The plant in question is one I was given. They were teardrop shaped bulbs. They grew to a heighth of about 24 inches, with an unusual flower.(picture included) Would like to know its common name. Any help would be appreciated
Hello, I didn't know what it was, but David Tarrant, a staff member at UBC Botanical Garden, identified it immediately. The plant is commonly known as Mexican shellflower or the Mexican tiger flower. Scientifically, it is known as Tigridia pavonia. It is a member of the Iris family. There is a lot of variation in the flower colour, as shown by a Google image search for Tigridia pavonia.
Thanks for the help! Thanks for the help in identifing the flower for me. I now know how to care for this beauty. I hope it flourishes in years to come. I wake every morning to new flowers and new colors. The blooms only last a day, But it's exciting to check every morning to see the next. Please tell Mr. Tarrant , Thank You....MsScarlett
