I've always just let it grow, trimming to try and bulk it out; the leaves turn very pretty in the fall, and the birds love the berries. Are the berries safe to eat?

Vaccinium ovatum 'Thunderbird' is UBC selection of native evergreen huckleberry. Certainly edible, often tart fruits of this species are esteemed by some.

Yes definately edible. The fruits are small, but said to be some of the most delicious huckelberries (I have not tasted them myself).
