Why are my Thuja placatas oozing sap? (These were purchased in March 2012 and were 4 metre hand dug specimens from a reliable source), the top half are green and vibrant, the lower half are week and flagging right now... and the oozing of sap here and there on the lower trunk is unsettling... what could this mean?

Many cultivated trees and shrubs down here are having problems with drought at this time. Check the soil moisure around yours, including inside the original rootballs.
