    Hi Everyone,

I planted about 70 Excelsa back in the fall (mid/late november).

Most recently (ie. yesterday) I noticed that the whole tree is starting to get a red 'tinge' to it. Not just particular branches but the whole tree. This is across all of our trees. The trees still look healthy - none of the needles are falling off or look they are dieing - so I am not overly concerned at this point.

I know these a 'red cedars' ... is this the color they will go in the winter months - or could there be something else at play?

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Curt

Hello , I have noticed the same thing with the western red cedars in my yard turning a reddish bronze type of color . The trees appear overall healthy also but do have this odd color change . They were planted in Nov 2010 and are doing well . I have researched a little and have read that this can be normal for these trees but would like to hear what you have been told . Thanks

I actually haven't figured out anything in regards to the red color. Ours did turn red again this fall and are quite 'rusty' now - but it is a very healthy rust color - not like any of them are going dead. Out of the 60 trees we planted a couple of years ago - we have lost NONE *fingers crossed*. They have also been growing what looks to be a foot a year :).

We are looking at putting another 80 or so in next fall.

Thanks for getting back to me. Sounds exactly what we are seeing here , the tree's seem healthy but do have this rusty color to them as the winter goes on . Interesting to note that if you turn the rusty pieces over and look at the inside of them they are bright bright green so I guess all is good . Thanks and keep me posted if you find anything out , as will I .

    Pitt,

Where did you get your trees from and how tall where they?

I got mine from Hiway Cedar (I think thats the name) - they have signs all over the place. Mine were 6-7 and I think I paid a reasonable price.

    Hi There ,

We had @ 3 dozen installed about 3 1/2 years ago and they were about 5 feet . We paid $15 each + installation . They are now @ 10-12 feet tall and are doing great . We did lose a few the first year but since then no worries and they are already forming a nice hedge around our yard . Cheers.
