Here's one to chew on. Why do some western redcedar become glaucous? I've taken cuttings from a quite conspicuous one elsewhere near Puget Sound and had them produce mostly unremarkable propagules, although it was not a genetically fixed character. It was so striking I stopped on/near the highway and tromped through the woods to find it and get the material. Subsequently a normal tree near me suddenly turned bluish one year. Since then I have since other instances. Maybe the old cultivar 'Glauca' was another instance of this.
