I found three little rabbits, or maybe hares, today in my backyard. Would like to relocate them, but without doing them any harm. Does anybody know if they are big enough to be on their own, or still need nursing by their mom? Will they bite me if I tried to catch them? They are very quiet, don't react almost at all when I touch them.
Not reacting is normal for newborn rabbits. They are very young and will not survive if separated from their mother, which leaves you with an obvious dilemma for which there is no easy answer.
Thank you vitog for your response. Yes, it is a rather unpleasant situation. I am definitely not happy to have them but, since I don't feel like killing them, it looks like I don't have a choice. Now, when it could be easy to catch them they should be left alone because they are too young to survive without the mother, but when they are old enough it may be not easy to catch them. May be later I will just try to scare them away. What is the best method of doing that? I have rabbits and/or hares for several years here already, so far I could live with that despite of some damage done by them, but I feel rather apprehensive of having too many around.
Do you hunt? Rabbit meat is quite good. Shooting at them should be an effective way to scare them away.
Three little rabbits today (I appreciate you not using the word 'bunnies'); a dozen or more next year.
