I came across this plant while weeding. Looked like a maple tree as I reached to give it a yank..... those thorns stopped me. What is this plant?

I believe it may be Kalopanax septemlobus.

Wrong leaf shape, this is very reminiscent of a maple leaf.

I don't know the plant, but it seems to have fairly variable leaf shape, several examples on an image search look a lot like your plant.

    Kalopanax septemlobus

Not a maple in any case, leaves aren't opposite. Nor do maples ever have thorns.

Yes it has thorns, yes, I said the leaves look like a maple, LOOK not ARE. The two species being discussed have a different type thorn.

Yes, I think we have a match.... apparently the leaves vary. Thank you for the assistance.
