I have a tree with long needle-like thorns. The leaf is like a mulberry. It flowered for the first time last summer on one part of the tree, then made small berries. Curious if anyone knows what it could be.

    Can you post a picture?
If not then the following information will help us ID it - What colour were the flowers? How about the berries? How big were the berries? Did they have a stone in them, or many seeds? How long are the "thorns"? What is the spacing of the "thorns"? The placement? Are the leaves purple?

On first blush, it's sounding like an ornamental cherry, Prunus spp; check out Pincherry and Chokecherry.
