Lichens have a surprise inside that scientists missed for 150 years Well, that makes things complicated. Mycorrhizal fungi, and now this make symbiosis much more common than previously thought.
Maybe it should not be such a surprise to find that if two things look different (and behave differently) but test out in analysis to be identical, the analytical techniques might be missing something. This would seem to have implications far beyond the two lichens compared in this study.
