I found this growing as a terrestrial in stands along a roadside with no trees nearby. It looks for all the world like the Cavendishia bracteata that I am familiar with except in my experience that is always an epiphyte although it will grow in the ground if you plant sticks of it. So can anyone help me identify this terrestrial version?

In the photo of the two leaves the one on the left is C. bracteata and on the right the unidentified plant. They look slightly different to me.

This article says the plant does well in the ground. Cavendishia bracteata

Interesting plant. I wonder if anyone has tried this in Vancouver area?

Yes C. bracteata does do well in the ground. I've planted plenty in my garden but I've never found it growing there naturally. As I said there were numerous thick and quite tall stands of this plant along the roadside. I would be very surprised if it is C. bracteata. The temperature where both grow never drops below about 14C. Don't know how that compares with Vancouver.

I see now that there are a number of terrestrial species.
