I have a Melford yew hedge and one has browning needles after our wet spring. I don’t think it’s going to make it. These are very hard to find in Western Washington. I am in Seattle. Does anyone know of a wholesaler that carries these? In the past I’ve tried the taxus x media yews that are readily available around here (think it was Eddie) but their growth pattern and color are very different.. I wondered if anyone knows of another variety that I can use if I can’t find another Melford? Maybe Stonehenge? The pictures look like it has a similar upright growth pattern but maybe not the super dark green. I sure regret choosing this variety. Thanks!
Yews are prone to root rotting water molds. If it appears your planting site soil is too wet for yews - or the one that failed later came to you already infected, has since created an area of infestation around itself - then sticking more yews in the same ground will not solve the problem. However, if you still wish to attempt going ahead with replacement planting apparently you can substitute 'Fastigiata' for 'Melfard' based on this: Conifer Database - Melfard (conifersociety.org)
My yew hedge has been there for more than 10 years and the suffering one until recently was thriving. I could replant it a bit higher but the I’m not sure in the end the problem is too much water. One side of it on the end gets dry and the other side (next to a healthy yew registers damp). There is a flowering maple near the yew, directly across from it a short distance, that has earned a bad reputation with me….it broke my water line. Can I blame the tree? lol
