If the cutting was taken from a fruiting portion of the tree, it will bear fruit when it has become established. You may want to do some research on whether this particular variety needs a pollinator.

Thanks for the quick response,i don't believe that it needs to be polinated but i cut a part off without a fruit flower but the tree did have fruit on it(just not on the cutting i cut). will it eventually grow flowers and bear fruit? Also im planning to make it a bonsai so will this effect anything?

Sorry for the delayed response; for some reason I didn't get notification of your last posting. The cutting is likely to be mature wood if the tree was bearing fruit in which case it would be ready to produce blooms. Do you know which variety of mandarin it is?

It is uncommon to see varieties other than Fortunella hindsii (Golden Bean Kumquat) used for bonsai. Never hurts to try though.

I have been growing lemon and orange trees from seeds, for 18 or more years now,( where does the time go?) and I only just learned that by bonsai-ing my citrus fruit trees so they will fit on my porch, I have actually been stopping them from blooming and fruiting! go figure!! The lemon tree grows so very fast that if I didn't constantly trim and tie down the branches I would have a 30 foot beast in no time! because they are evergreens they shouldn't lose their leaves, when they turn yellow its either because the soil isn't acidic enough, or lack of light penetration. (or lumens per watt of radiant flux). to increase light, you can buy gro bulbs at home hardware stores for about $5.50, (they work for about 18 hrs a day, 6 weeks) and they fit into a regular light socket or lamp. after putting one on my lemon tree, I have noticed new growth in 3 days. good luck with your adventure. once my trees are more filled in I will take the bamboo ties off and take some pictures to post.
