I recently got a bunch of tallandsia species in my work, and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with these plants. They are also called airplants, and are part of the bromiliad family ( sorry about the spelling).
I grow a few Tillandsias under lights with my orchids. They seem to appreciate bright light and frequent misting (or humidity). So far only one has flowered with small blue flowers after the entire plant turned bright pink. The seed pods have recently ripened and I'm trying to germinate seed on a piece of tree fern. The mature growth has returned to its revious green colour and will die but the 'pup' that it produced will go on to flower again. Shaun
I fight a daily battle with Tillandsias on my otherwise productive trees, my electical lines, my roof tiles, and pretty much any other outdoor surface. If I don't remove a few each day, they end up overbearing the tree. And don't get me started on Spanish Moss. As Shaun notes, full sun is not a problem for them, and I'll add that for some species you can also water-starve them fairly considerably. If you posted pics of your bromeliads, we'd be able to help you with both IDs and more specific care instructions.
I definetly know the names as we got invoiced for them etc. Ioanthera spp ( peanut clusters), X Victoria, Bulbosa are a few. There inside the reptile cages so they get good uv and humidity and care by me.
You want to hear a funny one, then? Bird of Paradise is considered noxious and invasive here, and sells for $10 a stem in Canada.
true...... we have willow trees in ontario... the sapplings we call pussy willows. there litteraley everywhere there. Here they well them for 14 bucks a stick. Philodendron plants go fer about 10 bucks a piece.
