I rescued this plant from my Mom's friend. She was going to throw it out. She says it is a Table Fern and a google search didn't help me - there were soooo many websites and way too much information to do with proper names, which I don't know for this plant.

I brought it home and cut back all the fronds that were totally dried out! As you can see there weren't many left that looked OK. It is planted in a potting mix soil for indoor plants but I am not sure if this is the soil this plant should be in.

The pot is 7" diameter. Should it stay in this pot or go into a smaller one? Can I save this plant or is it going to die? Some of the fronds left do look healthy, IMO. True?

Please let me know if it is worth trying to save this little one! Thanks, Barbara

    Adiantum pedatum, maidenhair fern.
    Definitely worth saving. Good luck!

Should do OK, as long as the soil is kept moist. It might take a year or two to recover fully to full size from its near-death drought experience, but it will recover.

Thanks to each of you for the nice answers BUT what about the pot and soil?? Should I put it in a smaller pot? I'll do a search about soil for this fern, now that I have the proper name for it. It just looks so out of place in that big pot!

I say: just leave the fern alone for a bit, pot-wise. It has more going on under the surface of the soil than is apparent by the visible leaves. Give it a good location, keep an eye on it, and I daresay pretty soon you'll see some new leaves.

I understand that you want to do all you can to help this plant---sometimes the best thing to do is to do nothing.

Your plant looks good to me. Patience!

Thankyou for all the help! I put the pot it is in inside a pebbles/water tray so it should get more humidity with that and in the ensuite bathroom which has a skylight. I hope it is happy there and I will patiently wait and see how it does!
