We have lived here in Azle, TX (northwest of Fort Worth) for over 20 years. Yesterday, we discovered this amazing flower just outside our patio, under an oak (?) tree. Any ideas what it is? 20160909_095657.jpg 20160909_095710.jpg

Wonder if it's a Nerine or Lycoris species. Looks similar to Lycoris radiata, red spider lily.

Thank you. It certainly resembles some of the pictures I found online. Why would it show up here after this many years? It looks like it has added another bloom today...

I found a picture on this webpage: 東莒~懷舊夢與回憶 (almost to the bottom of the page) that looks similar.... it's called Lycoris. I would love to have more, but this thing just popped up on its own. How does it grow from the tree?

Almost certainly, the bulb was planted there some years ago. For whatever reason, it hasn't had enough sun or has had too much earth on top of it for it to re-sprout before this. Maybe raking or tree roots dying or tree trimming helped it along.

There are plenty of bulbs that will remain dormant until conditions are favorable for them again. Liatris is famous for coming up in burned scrub areas of Florida.
