About 3 yrs ago, I bought a "tagged'' bartlett pear tree from Lowe's. When I got it home, while I was planting it, I pulled it out of the container and found that it was so waterlogged that the majority of the roots came off. Planted it anyway. At the end of that fall, I almost gave up on it because it hadn't even grown leaves but noticed a very small amount of growth so I waited. The next year it grew like crazy, now its about 10 ft tall and beautiful BUT no flowers. Last year bought another bartlett to cross pollinate and that one is about 5 ft tall WITH FLOWERS, still no flowers on the first tree. QUESTIONS: 1. should i give up on it and buy another or wait ? 2. why is this happening
Bartlett pear trees apparently are partly self-fruitful but do better with cross-pollination. Cross-pollination requires another compatible variety, not the same variety of fruit tree. So there is no great benefit in having two trees of the same variety; you may as well get rid of the tree that hasn't flowered and plant a compatible variety of pear. Check the Web for appropriate varieties that do well in your area.
We have a Bartlett and used an Anjou as a pollinator (had to cut it down a few years ago because of pear rust, but we still get some fruit from the Bartlett)
