I was looking for seed potatoes at B&K nursery in Gibsons when I couldn’t help but notice this good-looking tree. Surprised to see an ‘Autumnalis rosea’ in full bloom today, even if it was in a pot.
See post #715 We are convinced the trees on Harry Rd are ‘Somei-yoshino’. The first ones found on the Sunshine Coast….so far.
One fragrant ‘Shirotae’ near the piano at the Wine Garden Park in Gibsons Landing. See it soon - it’s maxed out.
Two more potential cherry scouts in Gibsons. Joy and Glenda under the ‘Shirotae’ at the Wine Garden Park.
This may or may not be our second spotting of ‘Somei-yoshino’ on the Sunshine Coast. My neighbour Joy suggested we drive up to this new neighbourhood in Gibsons on Jordan Way. The tree does look and feel different than the ‘Akebono’ we viewed today. I can only say that I didn’t see any petaloids. Glenda said the emerging leaves are greener than ‘Akebono’. It’s a mystery.
I think that's a good guess for now. If you didn't find petaloids, they must not be there. Stars are big. There seem to be every shape there is for sepals, but I think generally a little longer and more narrow than for 'Akebono'. Tree habit seems a little different than for young 'Akebono'. No hint of pink right now, except for one light-pink bud.
There are at least four ‘Shirotae’ planted on three different private properties near Smith and Tideview in Langdale. These ones are readily visible from the road. Thank you Georgia Strait for telling me about them. It’s a good way to pass the time while waiting for the ferry - short ‘hike’ from the Langdale Ferry terminal.
That second photo is so sad - it looks like it should have been a beautiful tree, maybe even not grafted, yet I assume there was a reason for all that pruning.
Well said - if for the price of a healthy new tree fr nursery - treat it properly :) one of my fav trees for classic shape is at south end of Franklin Rd tucked into a established, attractive landscape at foot of The Bluff near the Pandora tree on Harmony Lane
The ‘Shirotae’ in Madeira Park are attracting a lot of Rufous hummingbirds. I saw at least three different birds, none of which were easy to photograph with an old iPhone.
Dependable blossoms (variety?) on North Road across from 1191 North Rd (between Chamberlin and Persephone beer farm) variety? is it grafted? The trunk to branches seems so smooth (vs bulbous) I’d estimate (memory) that this tree was planted in mid to late 1990s photos on Sat April 11/26 thankfully no blades have attacked this shapely tree
I’ve noticed that tree, too. It’s ‘Akebono’. It’s usually the last ‘Akebono’ to bloom on the Sunshine Coast. Must be that north exposure.
Nice white blossom tree at approx 711 Hillcrest, Gibsons (photo) nearby Kanzan across Crucil Rd and remember the pretty white fluffy tree over near firehall on North Road — you can view up close from sidewalk
Beautiful pair of ‘Kanzan’ on private property in Madeira Park. Visible from afar, but even better close-up. Owners are very proud of their trees …rightly so. The corymbs looked like puffy pink pompoms today.
Eight ‘Kanzan’ on grounds of strata on Eaglecrest Drive. Used to be a mini-golf course (30 years ago). Trees must be approximately that age.
I guess this is it for the 2026 ‘Kanzan’ season. Time to say farewell. It’s not every year the pink snowflakes are this big (entire blossoms, not petals). I thought it was a great year for cherry scouting. Thanks to all the scouts (old and new) for the plethora of beautiful photos, new finds and informative text. And special thanks to our fearless leader Wendy Cutler for all her time, effort, expertise and wit.
