Another pair of ‘Akebono’ on Whitaker Rd in Davis Bay. Blooming, with numerous petaloids visible.

Almost blooming … outside Starbucks Gibsons BC today in pouring rain

Do you recall @Willard which name this is? I think there are several types (varieties?) of cherries throughout the entire Gibsons Park Plaza (1100 Sunshine Coast Highway)

as there are as well at Sunnycrest Mall (900 Gibsons Way)

Four cherry trees planted in four large pots at the Langdale ferry terminal, right outside the waiting room. I’m guessing ito-zakura, although they are not weeping. They’ve all got brown rot, probably from all the vehicle exhaust here.

All the many times waiting at the boat there and I have never noticed these container trees! Takes a scout to point it out.

when you say “brown rot” —- is that on the flowers or the trunk or branches?

that one is beautiful isn’t it —- if there was a category for “trees with great view” @wcutler — this tree qualifies

@Willard - next time you’re down that way (Shaw Rd in Gibsons) - I think this is a nice looking cherry tree about to bloom - the buds are huge - photo below; tree on left side of picture.

it’s on west side of Shaw near intersection of Ingles (also near intersection of Shaw and Oceanmount Blvd)

A quick drive-by today March 29/22 of the “almost blooming” twin cherry trees (see ID in attached photo) in “Olga’s Garden” at approx 2600 Lower Road in Roberts Creek BC

EDIT March 29/22 - I couldn’t stop for closer look — however the VCBF map indicates “blooming now” — so my “almost blooming” phrase above is possibly misleading

for those without a car — Sunshine Coast Transit (part of BC Transit) goes past this renowned garden on select times/routes (tell the driver you want “Lower Road” route (to or from Langdale Ferry). Transit takes routes past many other cherry trees including Franklin Road, Gibsons plus the two main shopping plazas 900 Gibsons Way and 1100 SC Hiway (some interesting mall cherry trees … and further to the fabulous large tree on Whitaker in Davis Bay (Lutheran Church across road) — then continue the main highway 101 Sechelt (aka Teredo St) with what have been id as Akebono. - and more at Trail Bay Mall and various civic / Justice buildings.)

A general collage view of pretty street trees in shishalh (Sechelt) approx 9am today March 29/22

In area of Sunshine Coast Credit Union and ScotiaBank — obviously

it is far prettier in person - esp early in the day with less traffic and a sun rising to the east

More of the gorgeous Akebono at the stoplight where Inlet Ave crosses Hwy 101 (Teredo St) in Sechelt (Sunshine Coast credit union building)

I looked up history of Akebono tree and am interested that it’s from a private nursery in San Jose California circa 1920 — gosh a hundred yrs of Akebono

Apparently there is a “fonds” of this nurseryman’s papers at UC Davis (the renowned agriculture univ nr Sacramento CA).
(I notice Clark is spelled Clarke on archives website)

there was dew on these blossoms yesterday morning approx 830am — a marine fog had cloaked shishalh (Sechelt) over the night and was just lifting as the sun rose.

it makes me wonder which of the many large (beyond large) tech companies might be built upon the birthplace nursery of Akebono in San Jose (Silicon Valley)

Speaking of progress, back to Gibsons and “haircuts” as aptly named by @Willard

this is down in the Bay Area - March 28/22 afternoon - Gibsons Landing - at a 1980s strata called Marina Place — this is the north gateway across from where the long paddle canoes are stored - it’s near a transit stop and bench

I have included a screen image from Google St View to show that this haircut (tonsor?) has shown leaves in past years

    it might again this year

@Willard has posted in this thread about a cherry at this strata’s other gate … off Truman road

    (I hope it’s a cherry i am barking up :)

I went to Winegarden Park in Gibsons Landing (near the main Post Office & Museum — below “Log Henge” & the street piano; also a transit stop)

to look at the nice stream and garden

@Willard has named this pair of trees previously
(EDIT to add link to Willard post last year about these two trees - oh dear, I can’t seem to link an exact post # … here is quote from last April “

Yesterday - March 31/22 - trees at north end of parking lot at Gibsons Park Plaza mall — close to medical/pharmacy building

    i think 5 trees total

i think they are approx 14 yrs planted in that garden (plus whatever age when planted)

thankfully no Gibsons haircut (aka sheared hacking and pruning)

this professionally designed landscaping include a dry creek bed for snow plow piles and huge rainfalls — several grasses and one of the cornus species (?) are planted around these trees

the other trees in same plaza have not bloomed yet EXCEPT the trees next to Starbucks at south end of plaza

Just north of Gibsons Park Plaza off Payne Road, there is a new subdivision with many level walking paths accessible from either Payne Road or Park Road (ice rink building)

there is a duck pond popular with mallards and red wing blackbirds

i found these three young cherry trees yesterday

(the huge tank in background is part of the town water system )
