Hi, All. We have an empty space in our west yard in which sunlight is filtered by nearby very tall trees. I'd like to see it used for mutual benefit of the residents of our building, & am wondering if there is any indigenous B.C. fruit tree which could grow well with this type of light. We could have selected branches trimmed on the large trees to admit more unfiltered light, as a limited improvement. But prefer not doing this, if possible. Does anyone have knowledge - or a possible alternative information source - to share? Thanks. Irene
Irene--the only fruit tree that comes to mind is sour cherry (pie cherry). Would your group use the fruit?! ( If not the cherries might be more of a drawback, compared to simply planting another ornamental nonfruiting tree that wouldn't make a mess with the fruit).
I guess Indian plum (Oemleria cerasiformis) might work. If you don't need a tree, huckleberries, or gooseberries would fruit in shade. You could use salal (Gaultheria shallon), but they are not a very tasty fruit.
