I live in north central Texas and when the squash gets to about three inches, the tip end starts to rot. Earlier, it produced some large squash. Any ideas what is causing this?

Summer squash will produce a small fruit on a female flower even before it is pollinated. If the flower is not pollinated the fruit will not continue to grow. The flower itself will drop off and then usually the end of the fruit begins to turn yellow and then rot. Does this sound like what is happening? Check your bee/pollinating insect count. If you are short of pollinating insects, try hand-pollinating a few and see if the problem resolves itself.
