Any ideas for a summer flowering, fragrant tree here on the sunshine coast. Should not grow bigger than around 20 ft.

If there was time to wait for it to grow up and get old enough to bloom, and you had a shady spot Rhododendron auriculatum has large, fragrant trumpets as late as August. Otherwise:

    Trees

    x Chitalpa tashkentensis
    Magnolia grandiflora
    Stewartia
    Vitex agnus-castus

    Shrubs

    Buddleja davidii
    Callistemon
    Clerodendrum
    Clethra
    Philadelphus

Ref: SUNSET WESTERN GARDEN BOOK Plant Selection Guide, Landscape Plant with Showy Flowers, pp. 74-75

Most trees will exceed 20 feet, some shrubs will grow that tall. Lofty Buddleja and Philadelphus are seen down here.

Chitalpa tashkentensis...good suggestion Ron! This is such a cool tree. Planted one in a large container a few years ago and it is superb. Its really rare here so I had to buy it when I found it. The flowers are second to none.
