    Hi everyone,

I'm looking to plant some sort of ornamental grass in one of the large, cedar planter boxes on our deck (in Vancouver). Any suggestions for a grass that is visually interesting and perhaps would reach a height of 1-2 metres? The planter gets a lot of sun.

    Thanks!

Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' is magnificent and should reach at least 5'. If the area will received less than 6 hr of sun a day, then this is the best choice. Blooms in late June.

Panicum virgatum - there are many cultivars, some with blue foliage, some with red tips. Likes more sun. Blooms in August.

Make sure you have a big pot!

Also spectacular is Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum', though it isn't as tall as you would like. It has burgundy leaves. Would be a wonderful contrast in front of the above 2, which are more upright. Full sun.

Also of interests is Carex flagellifera, which has tan-colored foliage. Can take part shade.
