Here's a challenge!: I'm a UBC student and I have a summer Job in Wells, BC, which is about 80km east of Quesnel. The hardiness zone is approx 1b-2b and I'll be there from about the last week of May until the first week of September. I am not sure what kind of yard the house will have, but I am wondering if you could suggest a few plants for me. The challenge is to find anything that can be planted late May/early June in this hardy zone (on a very small budget...) that will sprout/grow/bloom/do anything quickly enough to provide enjoyment before I leave in the first week of September. Vegetables would be an added bonus! I'm also thinking about herbs for cooking.
I've gardened a bit before but am not a pro, and therefore am not looking for a major project. Just a variety of plants to raise as a little hobby, with the reward of food or flowers.
    Thanks!

When you arrive there, look to purchase young tomato plants or other veggies that have already been growing a month. An alternative is that you can purchase seeds now, start them, take them with you and then plant them.

There will also certainly be annuals available - you might seek some out with edible flowers (from North Carolina State Univ. Extension)
