Portulacaria afra like most succulents wants loose soil with good drainage and lots of sun and warm temps. The most likely thing is that it is overwatered. Are there holes in the bottom of your pot? If not the plant will be suffocating. You might find more thorough information by searching the Latin name.

I was surprised to learn that it is called elephant bush because they (and humans) eat the plant where it is native in South Africa.

Thank you! I do have one hole at the bottom of the pot. Do you think if I repot it by itself it would be better? I try not to water it a lot :(
I honestly just tried to find the name and a lot of places said elephant Bush.

Yes, I think it would be better in its own pot.
