    Hi,

I found this cactus about 7 months ago that someone had discarded and it has bloomed. I've looked in every botanical book I have to identify it with no luck.

If anyone might know what it is I would be greatly appreciative.

    Thanks,

    Mark

It looks like a Schlumbergera to me. I would need to see the leaves (shape) to get any further with an ID. (common name may be Crab Cactus or Thanksgiving Cactus) Pretty bloom!

I have one of these and it was given to me as a Christmas present. I think my aunt told me it was a Christmas cactus but I am not sure what kind. I have ones that bloom like yours (white with pink), white with creamy white, white with yellow, salmon, and magenta.

Palest pink ("white") crab cactus cultivars like this are common at outlets here. I have grown this and other shades for years, in fact since I was a kid in school decades ago. Extremely easy and forgiving flowering house plants, unlike Christmas cactus not even requiring protection from evening light to set bud and flower - sometimes more than once per year.

Costco had big ones blooming in three colors this week, think they were about 25 bucks US. I look for small, cheap ones in shades I don't have already. Last year I got a strikingly strong scarlet(?)-colored one in a tiny pot, for a few bucks at Molbak's in Woodinville, WA. It has a flower out right now, is still in the tiny pot.

The Sunset Western Garden Book (2007, Sunset Publishing, Menlo Park) calls the type you have, that is the crab cactus Schlumbergera truncata and the Christmas cactus S. x buckleyi. Both are discussed on page 618.
