Found this knee-high plant, maybe a type of grass, growing in my backyard in South Florida where I throw a lot of old food out. Leaves are much rougher while rubbing in one direction than other...must have microscopic burrs on leaves pointing in one direction. Grew fast. Anybody recognize it?

Yikes! My research shows that one variety, perhaps the whole family, is considered the world's worst weed. I better destroy that sucker! I was hoping it was something useful. I better make a decision soon as you can see it is flowering.

A local horticulturist agrees. Here's his response...The plant is a flat sedge, probably Cyperus ligularis or C. retrorsus (spikes on former turn brown), but difficult to identify to species.

I pulled it out today. See photos. Pretty plant but not worth the risk.
