This very odd, alien looking things pops up every now and then under some conifers, growing in volcanic soil in subtropical New South Wales Australia. It's about the size of an adult thumb and smells strongly of something rotten. It seems that it must live below the ground and "flower" every now and then after heavy rains. It's been seen several time in roughly the same place for perhaps five years. When it "dies" it just wilts away. Does anyone know what it is? It looks a bit like Clathrus archeri which I found discussed in another thread in this forum http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=14744. If you could identify it that would help solve a little mystery. We're wondering if one night it won't wobble into our house, swipe us across the eyes then drag us down into the dirt. Thanks Richard
