Strange Plant

    Does anyone recognize this plant? It started growing on its own and is about 3 feet tall now.

    a note of caution, the unripen berries are poisonous.

    Yeah, pretty much all parts of a pokeweed plant are poisonous.

    Definitely pokeweed, Phytolacca americana.

    The fresh shoots are edible like asparagus but they must be cooked to remove the oxalates. Otherwise, the entire plant is poisonous.
