I thought this was an ornamental foliage plant. Not so. It's bloomed. It's made lilies. It's got me completely wierded out. The scent is reminiscent of canas, the colour of asiatics. The inflorescence is totally different. Today, there are nine flowers open and my backyard stinks so good.... Any clues as to what this may be? Thanks!
i agree crinum i have one similar but the bloom stalk on mine has more of a purple tint to it and it has yet to pup not sure why
that is absolutely beautiful!!!! mike, can you post a pic of yours? i really love anything that is purple...
i could not find any pics of my plant but it has about the same purple tint as the first pic if you click it it shows the tint better. mine has bloomed and the stalk does go almost total green when it is done and sometimes its more purple , sometimes more towards a green mostly just the slight purple tint i did find a pic of a purple crinum that i may get a pup from eventually not holding my breath. that is the price of plant trading sometimes ya get burnt but here is the pic i have seen some purple crinums as tall as 5 feet but there are different sized crinums and several hybrids with the amarylla belladona so different flower types too not sure if size is regulated by in ground or pot planting. i have a pink one that stays small only about 2 feet but have a white one that is almost 4 feet wish it would breed with the what we all call amarylla is actually hipesturtium . but even when mine has more of the purple tint its not a sticking purple just a hint of it and thats the main stalk going up to the bloom cluster. in the bloom cluster the smaller stalks that hold up the flowers are usually a good purple though
Neat! I'd never encountered an amaryllis or crinium with this bloom habit before. However, this is the tropics... Thanks, guys!
i live in florida subtropical but if i remember right crinums are originally from africa so they should do fine in the tropics i would think. the hipesturtium/ amarylla you could grow but dought it would bloom unless it gets some cold i have had to pull min up and put them in the fridge for a few months to get them to bloom but the crinums sometimes bloom two or three times a year my white one has bloomed twice the purple only the once and it just got done so the crinums will bloom in the heat even withought the cold i do believe but could be wrong
This one shot its bloom after the hottest part of the summer down here. It never gets too cold here (think +18 as an average low), so they will bloom here without being chilled.... I'm really jazzed that it might bloom more than once this year! I just love the smell.
Lorax...I have a similar plant and I never new what it was, now I can investigate. The flower I get is not so purple but pink, should be flowering soon :) Ed
There's tons of species in the Crinium genus... And your soil conditions will affect the colour of the flower as well. I'm pretty acidic, and don't have many blue flowers growing - even if they're supposed to be blue, they come out purple. Call it the floral litmus test, if you will. I'm glad I'm not the only one puzzled by my plants...
