strange growth on leaf

    This picture of a tree leaf shows a strange growth, as if a new leaf was growing out of it. Would anyone know what this is? The small tree belonged to my neighbour and has since been destroyed so I do not know how it developed.

    Thank you saltcedar. I looked up mite gall and found this particular occurence is from the spindle gall!
