this plant first appeared in my garden last year; and then again this year. I think it is an annual -- pulled the first one out, so not sure. It has a wiry habit, gracefu and open. the height varies from plant to plant, from about 1.5 feet to 3ish. The stems are sometimes green, on my favourite, maroon, and the flowers are always green. No-one here has any idea.
beggarticks?? great name, and apt for the way it behaves, clinging to clothes, hair, passing cats. But can you tell me more, or firm up the i.d., please. Botanical name, would help, though I know how hard that can be with weeds that are otherwise know as "you know, that stuff" in your area. Never seen it before, myself, and I kind of like it. But then someone no doubt once like Scotch broom! Should I cross my fingers before me and yell avert avert? thanks M
ok looked it up under that great name, to discover that amongst the illustrious ranks of beggarticks there exists one bidens connata; aka purplestem beggarticks which looks very much like my "green thingie" A wetland plant, so what it is doing in my superdry garden is anyones guess. thank you, Ron. Any sage advice??
The plant appears to be devil's (aka common) beggarticks (Bidens frondosa) of Asteraceae. It is native species of mesic to wet habitats, often growing on disturbed ground. Compare also tall beggarticks (B. vulgata) and the introduced three-parted beggarticks (B. tripartita) that are quite similar in morphology and habitat ecology. Cheers, Harri
thanks Harry I did look at devil's beggartick (partly 'cause I HOPED that might be right with such a name) and also common beggartick; but the foliage & stems of my green asteracae {:o)} looked much more like purplestem -- additionally both of the other two, at least in the site I was on, had YELLOW flowers and many many more petals. The flowers of this are most definitely green -- kids crayon green. I will try to take a picture today showing the leaf and stem more clearly. Just have a new digital camera, not up to speed with it yet. M
