When we moved to central Portugal last year our overgrown garden was covered in wild blue flowers I took to be Echium Vulgare. I cleared most, but some of those I left have this year thrown up beautiful tall (up to chest high), wide (up to 8"/20cm) flat ribbed flower spikes. Can anyone help?
Could be a crazy Echium plantagineum... :) Hm, looks like this mutant Echium-monster is "suspiciously frequent" in your area... so be careful!!! :))) This Echium was found also in Portugal: http://forum.pflanzenbestimmung.de/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3211
