    Hi,
2 weeks ago I planted some seeds in planters on my south facing balcony, which is open to the rain. I filled a number of planters with exactly the same mixture of bought potting mix, bought organic compost, a little bone meal and perlite. This morning I discovered that some of the planters had developed lots++ of blobs of clear jelly, about 1cm in diameter, sitting on top of the soil. I can't find any creatures in the jelly. What's weird, is that only some of the planters have the blobs of jelly. They are on a planter that has sweet pea seeds (no sign of germination yet) and on one with a mixture of annual flowers (which have just started to germinate). They haven't appeared on planters filled at the same time with radishes, lettuce, a thyme plant, a rosemary bush, and some campanula I got from a friend. There are 2 planters with daffodils on the same balcony (also unaffected), that have been out all winter/ spring. The blobs have also appeared on a planter I have in the back yard (north facing) that I filled at the same time with hostas I received from a friend.
Has anyone ANY idea what these blobs of clear jelly are, and will they do any harm...?
    thanks!

What type of potting mix did you buy? Some commercial potting mixes contain water holding crystals that expand to hold water, and then release it for the plants as the soil dries out. When they are fully expanded they look like jelly.

I second Daniels request for photographs.
