    Hello,

Due to the recent heavy snowfall in Vancouver, a branch of my Cherry Blossom tree cracked in the middle. To relieve the weight on the branch, I cut-off about 4 feet from the end with a hand saw. The remainder of the branch is still at attached to the main trunk. However, there is big hole in the middle of the branch due to the crack. I've attached a picture.

Should I remove the entire branch from the trunk? Alternatively, is there anything I should do about the hole/crack in the trunk to save the branch and the tree? Please advice.

    Thank you.

It would seem the best solution would be to remove the branch properly to the branch collar. It has what appears to be a 'banana' crack or fissure.

    Hi jimmyq,

Thank you for the prompt response. Should I remove the branch now or wait till Spring arrives?

    Regards,
    Fenton.

Pruning during the dormant season is normally recommended.
